Why Are My Gutters Overflowing?
Gutters overflow for four common reasons: a blocked downspout, a trough packed with debris, incorrect pitch so water sits instead of draining, or a system too small for the roof area. Where the water spills tells you which one it is. On most Edmonton homes the cause is a downspout plugged at the elbow, and a clean fixes it the same visit.
Read the overflow point
Watch during a steady rain and note where water comes over the edge.
- ·Spilling right beside a downspout: the downspout or its elbow is blocked.
- ·Spilling along one long run: the trough is packed, or the pitch is flat or reversed.
- ·Spilling over the front lip only during heavy rain: possible undersized trough or roof valley dumping into one spot.
- ·Water running behind the trough onto the fascia: missing or failed drip edge, or the trough has pulled away from the fascia.
Clogged downspouts are the usual culprit
Debris washes down the trough and jams at the top elbow, where the pipe narrows. The trough can look reasonably clear from the ground while the outlet is fully plugged.
Flushing each downspout with a hose until water runs clear at the discharge is the only reliable test. That flush is part of every FlowFix clean.
Pitch, sag and hanger problems
Troughs need a slight fall toward the outlet. Ice loading over Alberta winters pulls hangers loose and creates low spots where water stands, breeds mosquitoes and eventually overflows.
Re-securing hangers and re-pitching a sagging run is usually a quick repair we can do on the same visit as a clean.
Why it matters in Edmonton
Overflow that soaks the ground beside the foundation is the most common cause of basement seepage during spring melt. In winter, standing water in a trough freezes and forms the ice dams that lift shingles and damage soffit and fascia.
Common questions
Can I clear a downspout myself?
Sometimes — a garden hose fed from the top will push out a light clog. Compacted debris at the elbow usually needs the elbow opened or an auger.
Will gutter guards stop overflow?
They reduce trough debris but do not eliminate maintenance, and a guard that is not cleaned can cause water to shoot straight over the edge.
Do you fix sagging gutters as well as clean them?
Yes. Re-securing hangers, sealing pinhole leaks and re-pitching short runs are typically handled during the same visit.
